Image of Generator Circuit Breakers where our Temperature sensor are a key solution to measure in real-time the tempeerature protect from a catastrophic spike in heat. The primary function of a Generator Circuit Breaker (GCB) is to protect power generators from a critical event in the T&D system and vise versa to protect the T&D system from a critical event in the power generator. As a result, GCBs must have the capability to transmit high permanent currents while at the same time need to possess significant breaking capabilities. Monitoring the temperature of critical components (especially the conductors) within the GCB ensures their safe and uninterrupted operation.

The TempTrackr® system has the ability to detect the onset of thermal runaways by continuously monitoring multiple passive (no batteries, no power–supply) wireless temperature sensors installed in critical locations within the GCB. Furthermore, it can concurrently obtain data from up to 32 temperature sensors that need little to no maintenance.

Image of a power transformer where critical components can be measured with SenGenuity's TempTrackr so overheating does not negatively impact the life of the transformer The temperature of bushings and other critical components on transformers can negatively impact the performance and effectiveness of transformers. Traditional methods to monitor temperature including the use of thermal imaging cameras can only provide spot assessments and leave system operators vulnerable to the onset of undetected catastrophic events.

SenGenuity has developed a Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) based temperature measurement system that includes passive (no battery, no energy harvesting) wireless sensors and a reader to continuously monitor the temperature of critical components on transformers.

The average age of Switchgear in North America ranges between 34 and 45 years. With power utilities being forced to operate with strained capital expenditure budgets, extending the life of legacy power assets has become imperative. When power equipment like switchgear operates at elevated temperature, critical components and insulation start to degrade causing a vicious cycle of heat and component degradation. If unchecked, the situation can rapidly result in thermal runaway leading to catastrophic events and system downtime. Traditional methods of monitoring temperature, including the use of thermal imaging cameras, provide only spot assessments of overall equipment health. Continuous temperature monitoring on the other hand provides the ability to extend asset life while still maintaining safety and overall system reliability.

Sengenuity's TempTrackr® system has the ability to continuously monitor the temperature of critical components within Switchgear and provide early warning signs of imminent failure. The TempTrackr® system greatly enhances operator safety because it measures temperature in-situ and does away with the need to open cabinet doors, something that is often required when using thermal imaging cameras. The TempTrackr® system has the ability to concurrently obtain data from up to 32 temperature sensors that need little to no maintenance.
